International Day of Persons with Disabilities - 2023 blog

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), observed globally on December 3rd, was established in 1992 by the United Nations General Assembly. This day serves as a platform to mobilize support for crucial issues related to the inclusion of persons with disabilities, raise awareness about disability issues, and emphasize the benefits of creating an inclusive and accessible society.

Key Objectives of IDPD:

  • Inclusion Advocacy: IDPD mobilizes global support for the inclusion of persons with disabilities in all aspects of society, fostering a more inclusive world.
  • Awareness-Raising: The day seeks to increase awareness about disability issues, challenging stereotypes, and promoting a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by persons with disabilities.
  • Highlighting Benefits: IDPD shines a spotlight on the advantages of building a society that is inclusive and accessible to everyone, regardless of their abilities.

Theme for 2023:

Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Together: For, With, and By Persons with Disabilities
The focus is on recognizing the significant contributions of persons with disabilities and ensuring their meaningful participation in achieving the SDGs. With more than 1.3 billion people, or 16% of the global population, experiencing significant disabilities, the emphasis is on addressing health inequities, discriminatory practices, and barriers to full participation.

UN Disability Inclusion Strategy (UNDIS):

In 2019, UN Secretary-General António Guterres launched UNDIS, aiming to embed disability inclusion across the UN system. This strategy catalyzes systemic transformation and progress for persons with disabilities globally, emphasizing the importance of their participation in every aspect of society.

Types of Disabilities Recognized:

  • Visual impairment
  • Hearing impairment
  • Loco motor impairment; Cerebral Palsy
  • Mental retardation and Mental illness
  • Children with learning disabilities: Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia, Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Hard Hearing

Living with hearing impairment poses unique challenges, demanding a nuanced understanding of available treatments and diagnostic tests. Individuals facing hard hearing often explore various interventions to enhance their auditory experiences. Two significant aspects of this journey involve choosing effective treatments and undergoing tests for accurate diagnosis.

Treatment Strategies for Hard Hearing:

One prominent solution for managing hearing loss is the use of hearing aids, with the "Cochlear" brand standing out as a reputable choice. Cochlear implants, specialized surgical procedures performed by experts like Dr. Milind Kirtiney, offer transformative possibilities for those with severe hearing impairment.

Diagnostic Tests for Hearing Loss:

Accurate detection of hearing loss is crucial for tailored interventions. Tests such as BERA (Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response) and OAE (Otoacoustic Emissions) play vital roles in diagnosing and understanding the extent of hard hearing.

In Parth's journey, the expertise of professionals like Dr. Milind Kirtiney, renowned for cochlear implants, and Dr. Vineet Bhushan Gupta, who addressed Parth's left-hand concerns, played instrumental roles. institutions like Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for Hearing Handicapped in Mumbai, Delhi and Mysore, All India Institute for Hearing and Speech, John Tracy Clinic in Los Angeles and Orkids Multidisciplinary Clinic in Lajpat Nagar reflects a global perspective in exploring suitable avenues for individuals facing hard hearing.

Evolution of Disability Affairs in India:

The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment in India has been proactive in the disability sector, managing National Institutes and Composite Regional Centers.
The Disability Division evolved into the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan) to enhance its focus on disability-related matters.
India is a signatory to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), reinforcing its commitment to inclusivity.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities in India:

In India, the day holds significance with events organized by government bodies, NGOs, and civil society to promote awareness and celebrate the achievements of persons with disabilities. Initiatives aim to break down barriers, address health inequities, and promote the full participation and empowerment of persons with disabilities.

As we commemorate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the call for action echoes louder than ever. Let's unite to create a world where inclusivity is not just a goal but a lived reality, ensuring that no one is left behind on the journey towards sustainable development.
